LVT Underlay FAQs
What is the best underlay for LVT flooring?
Whether you’re using LVT click flooring or glue-down LVT flooring, a supportive and damp-proof underlay can provide a level surface for your flooring installation, improving its stability and comfort for years to come.
As mentioned above, at Simply Underlay, we believe that the LVT Dry Back 1.8mm Underlay by Duralay is the best underlay for vinyl flooring.
Suitable for glue-down or ‘dry back’ installations, this LVT flooring underlay is mildew-resistant and anti-microbial, providing essential moisture protection – in addition to noise reduction, thanks to its 1.8mm thick sponge rubber construction.
When you install this underlay, you’ll benefit from smooth, stable, and comfortable LVT flooring that’s protected against moisture ingress from the subfloor. What’s more, this solvent-free LVT underlay is 100% recyclable, so you can rest assured that your installation is environmentally friendly.

How do I install luxury vinyl tile underlay?
Fitting LVT flooring underlay is similar to fitting laminate underlay, as these flooring types typically use a ‘floating floor’ installation style (with flooring planks stuck together to create a continuous surface that lies on top of an underlay, instead of being directly attached to the subfloor).
The installation of LVT underlay would usually involve:
- Preparing the subfloor to make sure it is level and clean
- Rolling out the underlay, securing seams with tape, and cutting it to size
- Positioning the flooring on top of the underlay and trimming it to size
- Pressing the flooring onto the underlay’s adhesive backing
However, with Duralay LVT Dry Back Underlay, you can save time, effort, and money by minimising the subfloor preparation. Why apply screed when you can simply roll out the loose-lay underlay where you want it, peel back the protective film, and position the flooring before applying it to the high-grab adhesive backing?
Of course, you should always refer to the manufacturer’s instructions when installing any type of underlay.
What is the best LVT underlay thickness?
When installing luxury vinyl underlayment, the right thickness depends on the type and thickness of the vinyl tile flooring and the installation method.
For example, the best underlay for 4mm+ vinyl click flooring would be at least 1.5–2 mm thick to provide enough support for the locking mechanism. Similarly, the best thickness for glue-down or ‘dry back’ LVT underlay is 1–2mm, which should create a firm and durable base without movement damage.
Our Duralay Dry Back LVT Underlay is the perfect thickness at 1.8mm, made from resilient sponge rubber and specifically designed for heavy domestic use. Plus, if you’re looking for an acoustic underlay for LVT flooring, this material and thickness also provide impact sound reduction up to 15dB!
