How does thermal underlay improve home insulation?

Underlay is made from lots of tiny fibres that can trap air, creating a barrier between the subfloor below and the carpet above.

Insulated underlay for carpets is typically made from polyurethane (PU) foam or felt that can prevent heat from escaping, enhancing the energy efficiency of the flooring and the room. The thick yet lightweight material improves the comfort of the carpet and provides sound insulation to reduce impact noise, too.

What is a good TOG rating for thermal underlay for carpets?

You may be familiar with TOG ratings from choosing between summer and winter duvets. The TOG rating for carpet insulation underlay follows the same concept.

This ‘Thermal Overall Grade’ rates the insulation properties of the material – the higher the rating, the less heat transfers through it, making it a better insulator.

When it comes to under-carpet insulation, you will need a TOG rating of at least 2.0, though we recommend 2.5 or higher for more significant energy savings. The best thermal carpet underlay products have a TOG rating of 3.0 or above, from the Ball & Young Cosi 10mm Underlay (3.0) to the SU LuxWalk 11mm Underlay (3.5).
